Target Episode Guide

Part One: The First Doctor
An Unearthly Child - The Tenth Planet

By Jon Preddle

All bar four Doctor Who stories have been published in the Target series of novelisations, and the books stand in most cases as reasonably accurate records of each story. However what cannot easily be ascertained from reading the books alone is how each story was divided up into single episodes. The following guide, in several parts, provides that information, so that you can pinpoint in each Doctor Who novelisation exactly where each episode ending, or 'cliff-hanger', occurred.

The format is simple: the ending of the episode is given by the page number, followed by a brief quotation in italics to identify the point on the page at which the cliff-hanger occurs, unless it corresponds exactly to the end of a chapter, in which case only the chapter number is cited. If the cliff-hanger scene does not appear in the novelisation, the page number closest to the point at which it would have appeared in the book is noted, with a brief description of the 'missing' scene given in brackets.

It was common for some Sixties era stories to end each adventure with a cliff-hanger leading into the next story. In most cases, this cross-over between one story and the next features in the opening pages of the second novelisation. The instances when this has occurred are noted.
