Timewyrm: Apocalypse

Timewyrm: Apocalypse is better than Genesys - which is not hard - but not nearly as good as Exodus - which is not surprising.

Of the three New Adventures novels to date Apocalypse most resembles a typical story from the series. The plot is fairly fast paced, but not too complex. It is easy to picture it as a television story with its settings generally being either building interiors or wilderness - things that the BBC could afford. Also, as with the television series, we are not much subjected to characters' thoughts but rather are observers of the actions of both the heroes and the villains.

The Timewyrm itself is integrated quite well into the story. It has a seemingly peripheral role at the beginning of the book but comes into prominence towards the end. However, most importantly the concept of the Timewyrm is intrinsic to the book. The plot would not exist without it, unlike Genesys and Exodus where the stories would need only a little rearranging and the Timewyrm could be eliminated altogether.

Apocalypse has very little in the way of 'adult' pretensions - again a refreshing change from Genesys. All there is is Ace's (slight) romantic interest towards the character Raphael.

Ace is treated superficially but is in character, biffing her nitro nine around and not accepting defeat. The Doctor too, although he has no particularly insightful lines, is at least consistent - dedicated to combating the evil for which he feels responsible and maintaining a caring attitude towards Ace.

Of the other characters the Timewyrm is developed well, Revna is a fairly strong female character and it is interesting to see Miril's unfolding understanding of what is going on. However the majority of the characters can be placed into one of three groups: the elite Panjistri, the people of Kirith and the outcasts living on the Darkfell. Not much distinction is made between the personalities of characters within each group. They can be stereotyped as Panjistri - aloof, Kirithons - passive and outcasts - bitter.

Overall Apocalypse is moderately entertaining and worth reading as part of the continuing series, but not very memorable.
